About Me

I'm a voice geek.

Vocal anatomy and function, vocal hygiene, and efficient technique are aspects of singing that get me keyed up. I am fascinated with healthy phonation and cultivating life-long singers.

Achieving a healthy and efficient sound with your tonal ideal.

I have trained primarily in classical voice which has given me the tools to understand efficient, beautiful singing.  I have explored and performed many styles of singing. My education in vocal anatomy and vocal health have bolstered my ability to help each student achieve a healthy technique within their desired style of singing.

What do you want to learn?

Want to learn classical voice? I'm there. Want to learn theatrical voice? I'm there too. Are you a professional voice user, like a music therapist or public school music teacher? I can help. Want to learn grunge rock? That's not my thing, but I would be glad to point you in the right direction.

Who fits best in my studio?

  • Serious beginners, avocational performers, and professional vocalists who are curious and desire to learn.
  • Music teachers, music therapists, and others who use their singing voice for their job and need help staying healthy or finding healthy vocalization again.  My emphasis on and training in vocal health will assist you to get back in the game.
  • Whether you're in high school or just became a grandparent, I can help.

A moment of truth.

  • Are you a guardian or parent looking for lessons for your middle schooler or younger? I'm not the best person for you, but I can make a recommendation.
  • Are you a dabbler and just want to sing once a week in our lessons? I'm not the right fit for you, its just not how I work. I am a firm believer that there is a teacher out there for everyone, so don't let this dissuade you from finding your perfect teacher.

My Background

What's your training?

I am currently pursuing a Master's Degree in Vocal Pedagogy through the University of Essex with the Voice Study Centre. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Sciences and Disorders and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Western Washington University. My BA has given me a foundation in vocal health that allows me to understand the form and function of the vocal structure. My training has also taught me art and joy of interpretation and communication in performing.  I regularly attend workshops and conferences to continue my education. I have intentionally heavily emphasized vocal health in my pedagogy training, continuing ed, and personal research.

I have trained with:

  • Charles Peterson (current) -- Private voice and voice pedagogy
  • Katie Weld -- WWU, Private voice
  • Edward Cook -- Pedagogy lessons
  • Marianne Weltman -- Private Voice
  • Edie Delegans -- Private Voice
  • Mary-Perry Hardin -- Private Voice

What is your teaching experience?

I have been teaching private, one-on-one music lessons since 2014. I have operated my private studio since 2016.  I have led group vocal warm-ups for Cascadian Chorale and taught group classes on vocal technique.  I am open to teaching group lessons, but it's not my main gig. I am also available for contest adjudication.

What else are you doing?

Additionally, you can find me performing with Cascadian Chorale, a local choir group I have been singing with since September of 2018. Currently, I serve as the President of the Board of Directors of Cascadian Chorale.  I continue to attend professional development workshops and conferences to further my own education and keep my knowledge current.  I also have ongoing instruction in vocal pedagogy and singing with Charles Peterson.

Adjudicator

In early 2024, I was invited to judge the Maple Valley Idol Junior competition. I am excited to be judging again this year!

Not only does she have the background and professional know-how, but she is committed to her students and teaches in a manner that is both fun and flexible. Between her coaching and the toolkit she's provided, I've not only become a better vocalist, but better at self-educating too—and that kind of skill is indispensable.

After having had lessons from other teachers, we had given up the idea that my sister could learn to play piano and become musically literate. Fortunately, we found Tessa. She is exceedingly patient with my sister, encourages her and coaxes the very best effort from her. The turnaround has been remarkable! I am tremendously grateful to her for everything she has taught my sister and the joy music has brought to my sister and to our family.

I'm a nonbinary singer who has been studying with Tessa for a year, and my voice sounds so different from what it did before we started working together! I had years of vocal damage behind me, due to neglect, misuse, strain, and medical complications due to radiation therapy in my neck from 11 years ago. With her guidance and the tools I've learned from her, I've regained the soprano range that I had in high school, and my voice is smoother and more resonant than it was before our work together. She's so dedicated to her students, and has even come with me when I've visited an ENT to get my vocal folds scoped. I appreciate the extensive knowledge that she shares with me in our lessons, and her constant encouragement in my pursuit of vocal health. As I pursue a path of gender affirmative transition, I'm grateful to have her alongside me as I navigate changes to my voice.

Dealing with illness

Offering Flexibility

As we enter the post pandemic world and learn to live with this new virus, I do my best to take reasonable precautions against spreading any airborne respiratory virus. Currently, masks are not required for in-person lessons. This policy is subject to change based on the latest recommended respiratory illness related safety measures indicated by my local government. I offer voice lessons in-person or online via Google Meet.  If you choose the remote format, you will need a smart device with a camera. It is helpful to have headphones and an external microphone, but is not required.
